How much does a website cost in 2026? Prices, examples and cost drivers

In 2026 a professional website typically costs €1,500 to €6,000 with a freelancer and €5,000 to €20,000 or more with an agency. A website builder such as Wix or Jimdo costs €10 to €40 a month – but it also costs you your own time. With me, a one-page website starts at €1,490 and a multi-page business website at €3,490, each as a fixed price.

What does each type of website cost?

The ranges below are experience values from the German market (as of September 2026), not statistics. They do, however, give a good idea of the order of magnitude you should plan for – and explain why quotes for "a website" can differ by a factor of ten.

What determines the price of a website?

  • Scope: a one-page website is quicker to build than ten subpages, each with its own structure and its own copy.
  • Design: a custom design costs more than an adapted template – but it also does not look like a thousand other sites.
  • Content: if you supply the copy and images yourself, you save money. Copywriting, photography and translations are separate items.
  • Features: a contact form is standard; appointment booking, a customer area, a shop, multiple languages or integrations with your software push the price up.
  • Editing it yourself: a CMS (content management system) that lets you change content yourself costs more once and then saves you hourly fees.
  • SEO: basic optimisation (structure, meta data, load time) should always be included; dedicated landing pages for each service or region are extra work.
  • GDPR: SSL, a cookie solution, a privacy policy and forms that collect as little data as possible are part of the job – leaving them out is a false economy.
  • Speed: a project that has to be live in two weeks costs more than one with six weeks of lead time.

All prices are final prices; as a small business under § 19 of the German VAT Act, I do not charge VAT.

What running costs come after the launch?

  • Domain: roughly €10–20 a year.
  • Hosting: €5–20 a month for a typical business website, more for web apps.
  • SSL certificate: included with most hosting providers.
  • Maintenance: optional – updates, security checks, small changes. With me, €95 per hour or under a maintenance contract.
  • Content: new copy, references and guides build visibility over the long term – plan time or budget for them.

How do you recognise a fair offer?

  • A fixed price with a clearly described scope rather than a "from" price with no description of the work.
  • The code, domain and content belong to you – no vendor lock-in, no hidden subscriptions.
  • References that are live and that you can check for yourself.
  • A single point of contact who replies to you within one working day.
  • Load time and the mobile view are named as quality criteria, not just "modern design".

What do clients often ask?

With an agency you also pay for project managers, sales, offices and margin – with a freelancer you pay for the development. On large projects with many people involved, that overhead is worth it; for a business website it usually is not.

On paper, yes. But once you add your own time, the monthly fees over several years and the limits on design, load time and SEO, a custom website often works out cheaper after just two to three years – and it belongs to you.

Yes – in fact that is the most sensible route. A one-page website built on a clean foundation can later be extended with subpages, a CMS or landing pages without being rebuilt.

The region makes little difference to the price; the requirements do. With me, a website starts at €1,490 – with on-site meetings for clients in Augsburg and Munich, and remotely for everyone else. All prices are final prices; as a small business under § 19 of the German VAT Act, I do not charge VAT.
